Pet versus Battery hen
ITEMS YOU WILL NEED TO START OFF WITH
*** Hen house/run- Ensure it's easy to clean out and predator proof, there are so many different kinds to choose from; wood, plastic etc. See previous page
***Hen feeders & drinkers Many different types to choose from, whether plastic, galvanised or just low level plasterers type buckets within an old tyre.
***Bedding- some use Straw or Hemcore or Sundown (ensure it's not dusty)
***Layers meal- also known as "mash" and fed dry, ad lib.
*** Oystershell Grit- to sprinkle on the ground for them to peck at.
*** Disposable gloves- Always worth having for any emergencies that may arise.
Non immediate items (in our opinion) but still worth buying.
Mixed corn- fed in the afternoon as a treat but at first they will just eat layers meal.
Tinned sweetcorn- They love this as a treat. Drain the water off first. Prepare to be mobbed once they get a taste for it.
Mealworms- They LOVE Mealworms and will run from afar once they know what you've got. It can be quite a funny sight as they appear from all corners of the garden, running.
Garlic powder- Very good for the digestive tract and internal parasites. Scoopful added to mash 1 week each month
Poultry spice- optional, but we give it to ours during their moult as it's meant to make the moult pass more quickly. Smells like Aniseed.
Verm X- General herbal wormer(used around a month after the rescue)
Items such as Purple spray, Garlic Powder and Apple Cider Vinegar will usually be in the Equestrian section of your pet supplies.
